1. Self reliant. When heating with wood, you are not dependent on a power company. Fluctuating energy costs do not affect you. Instead you’ll be warming your toes by the fireplace with a good book in hand!
2. Support local economy. In most parts of the country, wood is available locally. Purchasing from those nearby boosts the economy of your community.
3. Provide jobs. Some people rely on firewood for at least part of their winter income. You may even have a neighbor who would be happy to sell you split logs.
4. Save. If you heat your home with wood instead of electric, you will save a chunk of money on your electric bill.
5. Offset heating cost. Are you shaking your head and saying it looks too involved to keep a fireplace or woodstove supplied with wood all winter long? Consider using wood heat as a secondary heat source. You may be surprised how much you save when it does suit you to keep the fireplace blazing.
6. Healthy exercise. Cutting and splitting wood provides a workout without paying for a gym membership. If you prefer to buy wood, the routine of keeping wood on the fire and a stack beside still gives you a healthy routine of exercise.
7. Heat food. The wood stove top is the perfect place to percolate your coffee, boil water for tea, or warm up soup for lunch. You can keep your food warm without extra expense for electric or wear and tear on your appliances!
8. Cozy warmth. Nothing keeps a house warm and cozy like wood heat. A fireplace makes a cheery, comfortable place to gather on cold winter nights.
9. Prepared for emergencies. You are well prepared if an ice storm hits your area and the power goes off. Your wood stove or fireplace will keep the house warm. If you have a wood stove, you can prepare food on the top just as you would on your electric stove. With a fireplace, you can turn the emergency into an adventure and roast hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire, creating an experience your children will never forget!
10. Decorative. A fireplace or wood stove beautifies the interior design of your home.
11. Sustainable resource. When we burn firewood, we are not using a resource that cannot be replaced. Trees can be replanted and harvested again.
12. Traditions. What family traditions could be created around the fireplace? Will you spend your evenings sipping tea and reading books? Will you roast apples at Christmastime? Or perhaps years from now your children will remember sitting around the fire as Grandpa told them stories of the past.
